The state Senate bill that would call upon a board of directors to oversee how the Catholic church operates its finances has been ruled unconstitutional by the state attorney general.
The church finance reform bill 10-98 is now off the table after a statewide uproar. Some are wondering how it got so far in the first place.
?I am surprised the judiciary committee even raised the bill for a public hearing,? says Sen. John McKinney. ?Everyone, even a first year law student, knows it?s unconstitutional.?
Scandals in Darien and Greenwich involving priests accused of stealing a combined $1.5 million from their parishes sparked the latest efforts to change how the church structures its finances.
Meanwhile, a public hearing to be held in Hartford on the issue is now canceled.
