Hundreds of people will be at Sherwood State Park in Westport next weekend for the annual Race for the Cure, which raises money and awareness for breast cancer programs and research.
Corrine Edgar's battle with breast cancer started nearly eight months ago. She says she's still here because of her doctor, Carmelia Lawrence, of St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport.
Dr. Lawrence says the work she does at St. Vincent's is possible thanks in part to support from the local chapter of Susan G. Komen.
A mobile mammography unit is one example of their partnership. Lawrence says it travels to local businesses, community fairs, health centers and churches.
Komen Southern New England CEO Lori van Dam says the mobile unit helps lead to early detection of the disease, which everyone from doctors to patients agree is key.
The local Komen chapter says that 75 percent of the funds raised stay in Connecticut. That money supports programs not just at St. Vincent's but at several other local hospitals, as well.
