With a new tax bill placed in the senate, some people are worried how this will affect families in Connecticut who are in need.
Under current tax codes, charitable contributions are able to collect itemized deductions. Those deductions would be eliminated if the Republican tax bill is approved.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal says he is going to try to urge lawmakers to reject the GOP tax bill at a rally later today in Hartford.
Local certified accountant Roy Abramowitz says that this tax break could prevent many people from donating.
"Even though people are charitable, they may not make these contributions because if you take a standard deduction, you're not going to be able to itemize and get a deduction for it," says Abramowitz says. “I just think that's going to be devastating for our state's attempt at recovery”.
According to Sen. Blumenthal, without Congressional action, 17,000 Connecticut children and 9 million nationwide will lose health insurance this winter.
Republicans say they would like to get this tax bill to the president’s office by Christmas.
