Residents gathered behind the apartments at Armstrong Court in Greenwich Saturday to evaluate an overgrown garden they plan to rebuild.
Neighbors who live in the building say they used to grow tomatoes, potatoes, corn and other vegetables in the space before the housing authority banned gardening tools on the property. Now, those living in the neighborhood are working together with the authorities to clear the overgrown vegetation and rebuild the community garden.
Residents like Neumecio Villagomez say the garden is large enough to feed those who live in the apartments and provide residents with extra produce to sell in the community.
"It could easily feed this whole complex, and they would probably be selling produce, too," Villagomez says.
Though the Saturday rain prevented the project from launching, community members say they will soon clear weeds, rebuild the fence and sow seeds in the garden.
