Some residents are questioning the patriotism of a Fairfield restaurant because of the way the American flag is displayed.
The Black Rock Oyster Bar and Grill on Black Rock Turnpike uses a gaff-rigged flagpole, which is typically used on ships at sea. The design puts the American flag lower than normal flagpoles.
The head chef of the restaurant says he has heard a lot of anger from residents. Some residents say if the flag is on land, it should be flown at the top of the pole.
James Wiltsie, an officer with the Fairfield Police Department?s marine unit, says the flagpole at the restaurant is in line with the sea tradition. He adds that displays like Black Rock Oyster?s are common in front of yacht clubs and marinas.
