Families with loved ones in nursing homes finally got the news they were hoping for with indoor in-person visitation restrictions lifted.
State officials have given the green light for nursing homes to allow visitors inside the building and let residents leave the facility.
Janis Annunziata says her 94-year-old father, Joe Pasquarelli, lives at Sunrise of Stamford, an assisted living facility for seniors. Annunziata says she hopes Sunrise of Stamford will allow her to visit her dad inside the facility. She also says her father desperately needs time outside of the facility.
State officials say screening needs to be conducted for all who enter the facility, social distancing protocols should be followed and the amount of visitors should be limited. Officials say cleaning and disinfecting needs to be done at a high frequency.
Quinnipiac University professor Nicholas Nicholson has been studying the impact of isolation on the aging population. He says allowing for face-to-face conversations to happen is extremely important.
Nicholson says more research has to be done to see if the impact of isolation can be reversed however he feels like in-person interactions will help.
Sunrise of Stamford issued a statement saying, "Although the governor's recent announcement regarding indoor visitation is not applicable to assisted living providers our team is in the process of expanding our existing visitation protocol to include indoor visitation in preparation for colder months and in anticipation of additional guidance from local health officials."
The new guidance calls for restrictions to be put back in place immediately after a single positive diagnosis in an individual home.
