A local organization is asking for help to feed the hungry in the area this spring.

Catholic Charities of Fairfield County hopes you can assist local families, children and seniors struggling to get basic nutrition. You can make a Lenten gift through their Loaves and Fishes program.

Catholic Charities' food service programs provide critically needed assistance through soup kitchens, food pantries, and home-delivered meals for the elderly, sharing more than 2.1 million meals last year. Some of the programs they support include:

  • The Thomas Merton Family Center in Bridgeport

  • New Covenant Center in Stamford

  • Room to Grow Preschool Food Pantry in Norwalk

  • Multiple Senior Meals on Wheels programs

“Sadly, Fairfield County is No. 1 in the nation in income inequality," said Mike Donoghue, executive director of Catholic Charities of Fairfield County. "So while there are a lot of people who do very well in Fairfield County, if you're a low-income service worker making minimum wage, it's really difficult to make ends meet — and it's gotten even more difficult over the last few years.”

The Loaves and Fishes program runs until April 6.
