Police say a young woman was killed Friday at the same Westchester amusement park where a Connecticut boy was killed two years ago.
Seven-year-old Jon Kely Cassara, of Norwalk, was killed on the Old Mill ride at Rye Playland in 2005 when he became trapped under a conveyer belt. Upon hearing of Friday?s incident, Cassara?s mother Elayne said, ?I?m devastated. I know what the family is going through right now.?
Police said 21-year-old Gabriela Garin, the operator of the Mind Scrambler ride, was killed Friday when she was thrown off the ride.
Just as the accident was happening, Cassara was holding a gala benefit in Darien to raise money for a nonprofit foundation she established in honor of her son. ?It was shocking to find out that simultaneously tragedy was happening again at Playland,? she said.
Cassara said she's going to continue to work to improve amusement park safety, as she has since her son?s death. She said the latest incident has inspired her to keep working towards saving lives.
