Surveillance video suggests the same thieves could be behind a series of smoke shop smash-and-grabs in Fairfield County. Cameras at Leo Tobacco & Cigar in Shelton captured a white BMW SUV pulling up to the business at 3:21 a.m. Saturday, July 27, just as one had at Clever Smoke Shop in Norwalk 26 hours earlier. News 12’s report on the burglary there was sent to the owner of Leo Tobacco & Cigar, who found himself having déjà vu.
“When I saw the video, I saw the same car and the same kids,” Leo Alarumi explained.
The footage from Leo Tobacco & Cigar certainly looks similar. It shows four suspects, one of whom throws a brick at the front door but needs a second try to break the glass.
“I was sleeping in the middle of the night, and then I got a call from the alarm system saying that there's been a breach. I check on my cameras and the next thing I know I see glass on the floor,” Alarumi told News 12. In the video, the thieves run in with bags, which they fill with items from the shelves. They also hit the cash register.
“They took about $400 from the register, about $1,000 to $,2000 worth of inventory. Just quick grab and go. One minute in, one minute out,” said Alarumi.
He also said the door will cost $2,000 to $3,000 to fix.
It’s a blow to a business that only opened about four months ago.
“When you're first starting and something like this happens to you, it hurts,” Alarumi stated.
It was the same situation for the owner of Clever Smoke Shop. A large rock was used to shatter the front door of his business around 1:24 a.m. on July 26. Three suspects are in that video grabbing cash and whatever merchandise they could hold. Norwalk police said their investigation is ongoing.
Alarumi said Shelton police told him the break-in at his business was likely tied to others in the region.
“They said there was a BMW going around, and they do believe it is stolen,” Alarumi told News 12. “It made me frustrated because if there's nothing done about it, and the same kids are getting away with it, it's a problem for me. You know, it hurts, and I share the same pain as all the other business owners.”
News 12 reached out to Shelton police to find out how many incidents may be linked but has not heard back yet.
