Sen. Richard Blumenthal met with a national security expert Sunday to talk about the long-term impact of the coronavirus pandemic in Connecticut and the United States.
Former top FBI executive Kevin Kline told Sen. Blumenthal that COVID-19 could make it difficult for schools and universities to bring students back on campus "anytime soon."
"We need to ensure that our health system, our hospitals, are absolutely postured to deal with the large number of patients that are anticipated," Kline said. "Then we need to work on limiting, and then reversing, the spread of this disease."
Sen. Blumenthal said he does not believe the U.S. will have to impose severe restrictions seen in Italy and China, but says Congress should get back to work immediately to deal with the pandemic.
"The coronavirus is not taking any recess," said Sen. Blumenthal. "Congress should not be taking a recess. We should be back at work right now providing for the surge in hospital demands as well as the testing needs."
He added he thinks the Senate needs to pass the emergency aid package already approved by the House of Representatives as quickly as possible.
