The charity Amy's Angels was recognized at Fairfield University Sunday for helping hundreds of people struggling with the effects of serious illness and injury.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal honored Bob Fiondella, who founded the nonprofit.
He saw a story on News 12 Connecticut recently about a struggling family, then donated $15,000 to help them get home nursing care for a loved one with muscular dystrophy.
The charity is looking to extend its reach into western Connecticut.
Fiondella says he and his wife met at Fairfield University, where the Jesuit values of love and charity inspired them to embark on a life of service.
