Sen. Richard Blumenthal is warning Connecticut residents after a study found that some acne products with benzoyl peroxide contain high levels of carcinogens.
Several products tested by quality assurance company Valisure had 18 times the number of carcinogens allowed in U.S. drugs.
Benzene, found in some degraded benzoyl peroxide products, is strongly linked to higher risks of cancers including leukemia and other blood conditions.
Blumenthal has called on the FDA to update industry guidelines in wake of the study.
