After a long evening of debate, the state Senate was able to pass Connecticut's budget on time in a 19-17 vote.
Senate Republicans spoke at length in an effort to filibuster the vote, saying the budget has negative fiscal implications for future generations.
The Senate president rose just after 11 p.m. and threatened to use a rare rule to force an end to the debate and have a vote before the midnight deadline.
Two democrats broke party lines and voted against the budget deal.
Legislators will have to return to the Capital to pass the bills that put the budget into place. That will have to happen before the start of the fiscal year on July 1.
