Monday's snow resulted in canceled classes for several school districts in southwestern Connecticut.
Westport's superintendent, Dr. Elliot Landon, says that the decision to cancel classes or dismiss students early starts with looking at snow predictions from the forecast service the school district subscribes to.
"I will call our public works department and our highway department to see what the nature of the roads is," Landon says. "I'll call the police department to see if they have any insight."
Landon says Monday's decision to dismiss students early was based on whether bus drivers who work the mornings and afternoons would be able to return for the drive home.
Westport was one of the last school systems to announce a decision, followed by Fairfield Public Schools.
Landon says most school administrators are reluctant to take kids out of class when they are supposed to be there, but that in the end, safety comes first.
