Most high school students use their personal time for sports or clubs, but the town of Darien has a unique set of students who volunteer their time a little differently.
"It's an amazing responsibility that we're given as high school students," Stella Nehro says, "To literally have people's lives in our hands."
The 80 volunteers respond to nearly 2,000 calls every year, but they rely entirely on donations from the community.
On Thursday night, Darien residents helped raised money for Post 53 at Nielsen's Florist.
"I would've never thought to do something like this at their age," marketing manager Viviane Herde says. "I think it's amazing how this opportunity offers these young people to open their eyes to something so important in the longer run."
The annual event was sold out, and Post 53 volunteers say it's heartwarming to see the community return the favor.
"I think everyone who has experienced us knows the 'Post Magic," volunteer EMT Payson England says. "But I think we're just as important to the community as they are to us because without the community, we couldn't do as well as we do."
