Several school districts in southwestern Connecticut are in danger of seeing state funding slashed under Gov. Dannel Malloy's budget proposal.
The governor's plan maintains funding for schools in Bridgeport, Norwalk and Stamford. Nine other districts, including Easton and Redding, may see state funding cut off altogether.
Thomas McMorran, superintendent of the Easton, Redding and Region 9 School Districts, says the cuts will make it difficult to provide students with the best education possible.
He says there are about 2,900 students in the districts, and the cuts will mostly hurt sports and extracurricular activities.
The superintendent says the cuts will also make it more difficult to meet state mandates for anti-bullying initiatives and teaching students new technologies.
While some residents say they oppose a tax increase, McMorran says that the proposed cuts could prompt the town to put an increase up for a vote.
