A song written by a community activist about all the recent murders in Bridgeport has gone viral on social media.
"I wrote this song while I was holding my daughter, thinking, if I'm gone, who's gonna' support her?" says Joe Grits.
According to Grits, the homicides have taken a heavy toll on families, and he wanted to write a song that depicted their pain.
Grits says the title of his song, "GoFundMe," is named after the crowd-funding website that's used to raise money for many victims' funerals.
If people spent more time preventing violent crime, Grits says, they wouldn't have to work so hard cleaning up the mess it leaves behind.
"If I put out a good message being a well-known artist from the community, maybe a child, a youth or even a grown man my age might listen to it and see the hurt,” says Grits. “Like I said in the song, you know, the mother hurts, and then the brother hurts and then the brother might want to hurt somebody else because he's hurting. It's just a cycle!"
Grits says he's grateful to have the chance to build awareness through his music about the need to reduce violent crime.
