A business that was born with the construction of I-95 and the Merritt Parkway is planning to close its doors.
United House Wrecking started selling salvage from homes that were torn down for new roads, and made Stamford a destination for decorators.
It was founded in the '50s as the Lodato Brothers Salvage Yard, with the remains of homes torn down for the highways. The Sicilian brothers from West Virginia found gold in what remained, and the salvage yard grew.
The business passed to a younger generation in the '80s, who transformed it with furniture and antiques. Signature treasures from the Danbury Fair are headed to new homes.
The owners explain that for the past five years, retailing became harder. They say antiques lost popularity, and trade moved online.
The owners accepted an offer to sell the property and begin a new chapter.
The final sale will go through the end of November.
