One Stamford church aimed to make sure local students had supplies before their first day later this week.
Bethel AME Church teamed up with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and area barbers to host a back-to-school event at the Yerwood Center gym on Monday. Students got free haircuts, backpacks and other supplies for the start of school on Wednesday.
Barber Thomas Bradford said events like this are a way to give back to the community.
Around 100 backpacks stuffed with supplies were given away on a first-come, first-served basis. Kids also got complimentary haircuts from barbers.
The giveaway comes just days before school starts on Wednesday for Stamford students and others across the state. Some districts headed back to class on Monday.
