Stamford Democratic Party committee voted to expel member Anabel Figueroa on Wednesday.
The vote to expel Figueroa passed 37-1, with one person abstaining.
The committee says Figueroa’s repeated antisemitic statements violated their anti-hate policy.
Figueroa stated in a Spanish interview, “We cannot have a person of Jewish origin represent our community. It’s not possible,” while competing against opponent Jonathan Jacobsen in last month’s Democratic primary election.
Figueroa’s attorney says they will keep fighting despite Wednesday’s vote.
“We have to go up to the state central committee,” Figueroa’s attorney Carmen Lopez says. “They will have to appoint a committee who will hear it, and then of course, if we get nothing there if we don’t find a remedy that we’re looking for, then we’ll have to find a way to get into court.”
Her attorney says Figueroa is also facing pushback for her to be removed from her other roles.
Figueroa is also a member of the city’s Board of Representatives and the representative of the 148th District in the state House.
