Stamford fire officials handed out free smoke alarms today in the wake of the Christmas morning house fire that killed five people. Firefighters gave away 250 detectors to residents at the city's Government Center. The detectors were donated by First Alert, a company specializing in home security. "We can't change the past, but we can definitely go forward and prevent things in the future from happening," said Turn of River Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Maounis. The next giveaway will be Tuesday, Jan. 31, and firefighters say they will come to residents' homes to help install the alarms.Stamford mayor sounds alarm on smoke detectors
