Stamford has fired the director of its animal shelter as part of an investigation into improper adoptions at the facility.

Stamford Mayor David Martin says Laurie Hollywood failed to report dogs with a history of biting. Several of those dogs were then adopted and Martin says more biting incidents were reported.

Dogs described as "harmless" in advertisements were often returned for biting people. Hollywood then allegedly falsified documents, allowing dogs with a history of biting to be readopted. The dogs then bit their new owners.

The city has concluded its investigation, but the Stamford Police Department has a criminal investigation pending. Martin says the shelter is now reopen for drop-offs and adoptions, but is still closed to volunteers. The city has also formed a task force to review the shelter's current policies and explore locations for a new facility.
