Stamford Mayor David Martin announced today that he has skin cancer and will undergo surgery next week.
Martin learned he had cancer six weeks ago. He will undergo outpatient surgery Tuesday to remove the melanoma.
"This is as mild and as least risky melanoma you can get, and one of the physicians said that I have probably a 5 percent chance of recurrence in 10 years," said Martin.
Martin said doctors caught his cancer early because he regularly checks his skin. He hopes his diagnosis can be a wake-up call to others.
