Stamford mayor vetoes ban that would have prohibited the sale of cats and dogs

Simmons explained her reasoning in documents obtained by News 12: "Pet shops are licensed by the State of Connecticut and state law permits the sale of dogs and cats by licensed pet shops. As mayor, my obligation is to follow the law. Signing this ordinance would be a symbolic act and cannot be enforced under current state law," she wrote

Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons has vetoed an ordinance passed by the city's Board of Representatives that would ban the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores.

Simmons explained her reasoning in documents obtained by News 12:

"Pet shops are licensed by the State of Connecticut and state law permits the sale of dogs and cats by licensed pet shops. As mayor, my obligation is to follow the law. Signing this ordinance would be a symbolic act and cannot be enforced under current state law," she wrote.

In a statement, board member Karen Camporeale said, "I am deeply shocked that the mayor has vetoed four ordinances... in my time on the board, I have never seen such overwhelming support for any ordinance."

Camporeale also said Simmons' vetoe is a "rebuke of both the legislative process and democracy as a whole."
