Officials are performing maintenance on the hurricane barrier on the eastern branch of Stamford's harbor as another hurricane makes its way up the East Coast.
The Army Corps of Engineers closed the barrier to make previously scheduled repairs. It could reopen Thursday night.
Hurricane Joaquin is moving up the Atlantic.
The barrier keeps high tides and storm surges from causing flooding. It was estimated to have saved Stamford about $20 million in damage during Superstorm Sandy.
Boaters at Brewer Yacht Haven Marina, which is also in the harbor, were out Wednesday tying up loose ends.
The marina houses about 380 boats. Officials have reached out to owners to alert them ahead of the storm.
Marina officials say boaters should stow away loose gear and secure or remove sails and canvas tops.
