Attorney General William Tong sent letters this week to Amazon, eBay and other online marketplaces, urging new policies and protections for consumers.

The letter claims some online sellers are marking up products like hand sanitizers as much as 1,000%.

The attorney general says it's important to protect consumers from profiteering - while being fair to retailers, who are also struggling right now.

"If the price is higher than normal because of the cost of you buying it from your supplier or wholesaler, then that's not the retailer's fault. And that's why it's important for us to understand what the retailer's buying those products for, what the cost of acquisition is, and whether it's true price gouging," Tong says.
