State lawmakers have approved a bill for stiffer drag racing laws in Connecticut.

Shalymar Herrera, Brianna Torres-Carter and Carter's unborn baby were killed in a drag race in Shelton last year.

Their families lobbied in Hartford for tougher penalties back in March.

State lawmakers Wednesday morning approved a bill raising the maximum sentence to three years for negligent homicide, a $3,500 fine or both.

The Herreras say they have been contacted by parents in other states who have dealt with the same tragedies and are also trying to toughen the penalties in their states. The Herreras think even more can be done.

The bill will now go to Gov. Ned Lamont to sign. It would take effect in October.
