State lawmakers have proposed a bill that would provide $50 million to Connecticut's homeless response system.
This comes after the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness recently held a virtual rally calling on legislators for funding.
The coalition says the homeless response system is overburdened, underfunded and understaffed. They assert that consistent and reliable funding from the state is necessary as federal money is set to expire.
The organization Advancing CT Together says homelessness is up 13% across the state.
Michele Conderino, executive director of Open Doors in Norwalk, says their shelter has been at capacity the past few months.
“This system cannot sustain itself. If it cannot sustain itself, more and more people are going to fall into and linger in homelessness,” she said.
The co-chairs of the Housing Committee, members of the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness and state representatives are holding a press conference at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford to talk more about the proposed legislation.
