Poor test scores have landed five Bronx schools on the state's education watch list.

For the first time, scores on the new English language arts and math exams for grades three through eight were used to compile the Schools Under Registration Review (SURR) list. New York State Education Department (NYSED) Commissioner Richard Mills made the announcement Thursday after consulting New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein.

Mills placed Middle School 203, Middle School 301 Paul L. Dunbar, Junior High School 22 Jordan L. Mott, Intermediate School 339 School of Communications and Intermediate School 232 on the list. The schools will receive special attention from city and state education officials and are expected to remain SURR schools for no more than three years.

Public School 230 Dr. Roland N. Patterson, Public School 396 and Monroe Academy for Visual Arts and Design managed to make it off the list this year.

The NYSED plans to close two New York City schools that have failed to make progress as a SURR school. The names of those schools have not yet been released.
