As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, police are increasing patrols on the roads.
State troopers say they'll have increased patrols and DUI checkpoints on roads and highways throughout the state throughout the Fourth of July holiday.
Police say in addition to the risk of drunken drivers from holiday parties and backyard barbecues, an especially busy travel season could make for heavy traffic.
Both marked and unmarked cars will be stepping up enforcement for DUI, speeding and distracted driving.
Troopers say the Department of Transportation's highway cameras will also be used to enforce traffic laws.
"We get some sort of call about a really egregious, erratic operator, driving recklessly. DOT will assist us in trying to locate that on the highway cameras and then we can zoom in with a trooper on patrol to really try to apprehend that operator,” says Sgt. Robert Derry, of Connecticut State Police Troop G.
There will be extra patrols on the roads starting Tuesday and will continue all the way through the holiday weekend.
Over last year's Fourth of July weekend, state police issued nearly 3,000 tickets for moving violations and made 60 DUI arrests.
State police say they responded to 398 accidents over last year's Fourth of July weekend. They say one crash ended in a fatality.
