Several people in western Connecticut say they have fallen victim to a security breach involving their college education savings accounts.
Fairfield police say three people were hacked in town losing about $140,000 from their college education fund.
State Treasurer Denise Nappier said in a release Thursday that this is the first known breach in the 20-year history of the Connecticut Higher Education Trust, or CHET.
She says 44 higher education accounts have been hacked in Connecticut and that $1.4 million has been taken.
Lori Torrano, an Edward Jones financial advisor, says to use systems that are read-only to ensure that no one is able to make a change to the account. She says this way no one will be able to take money out, request a check or empty an account.
Fairfield police say the money will be reimbursed. State police and FBI are also investigating.
