Governor Jodi Rell (R-CT) is hoping to reduce the amount southwestern Connecticut residents are paying at the pump by implementing a two-point plan. The first part of Rell?s plan is to remove the gas tax at the pump. Michael Fox, executive director of the Gasoline and Automotive Service Dealers of America, calls this plan a temporary fix. He believes the governor should cap the gross receipts tax. He believes it could result in an immediate drop in prices without the state losing any revenue. Part two of Rell's plan is to put a two-year moratorium on zone pricing, where a station owner sells his gas at drastically different prices at varying station locations. Last year, a bill on Zone Pricing passed into legislation by a vote of 29 to seven.Fox says if Rell's proposals are successful, Connecticut consumers will save a lot of money. He also says this could realistically be put in place as soon as February 1.
