Democratic Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman invited a former undocumented immigrant who was once employed at the Trump National Golf Club to be her guest at the State of the Union address.
Victorina Morales and several other women went to the media to explain that they were undocumented citizens while they were employed at the Trump golf course. They came forward after President Donald Trump appeared to make comments equating Latin American immigrants with violent criminals.
Morales has since become a legal citizen. She lived in Bound Brook, which is where many other employees of the Bedminster golf club live.
News 12 New Jersey’s Brian Donohue went to Bound Brook to see if he could find some current or former employees of Trump National. Donohue says that he met several people who were former employees of the club who said that they worked there while living in the country illegally.
Donohue says that many people seemed to approach him with stories. He says that many felt like coming forward thanks to Morales and that they see her as a hero.
“I think it's fantastic. I think it's a story that needed to be told. Especially in today's climate, where the guy that's telling the other side of the story is vilifying her. Yet he'll employ her and people like her in his businesses,” says Bound Brook resident Abel Gomez.
In an email to the Washington Post after more undocumented immigrants were fired from the Trump club in Westchester County last week, Eric Trump said the organization is "making a broad effort to identify any employee who has given false and fraudulent documents to unlawfully gain employment. Where identified, any individual will be terminated immediately.”
He added, “the discovery of illegal immigrants working there is one of the reasons my father is fighting so hard for immigration reform. The system is broken."
The New York Times reported this week that an additional five workers were dismissed from the Trump-owned Pine Hill Golf Club in Camden County for not having proper documentation.
