The Stamford city attorney says lawmakers' plan to ban pet stores from selling dogs and cats may be illegal.
The Board of Representatives proposed outlawing the sale of dogs and cats at pet stores to try to cut down on puppy mills.
When leaders began holding hearings, the city attorney released the opposing preliminary opinion Friday.
The bill's original sponsors say they blame intense lobbying from the pet industry.
News 12 is told the board has received other legal opinions that they are within their rights to have the ban.
The board's Legislative and Rules Committee is scheduled to discuss the case at their meeting on Tuesday.
