The first Blind Hockey Open State of the season was held at the Long Island Sports Hub in Syosset Sunday night.
Around 34 skaters either played hockey or learned how to skate at the event.
Ted Caputo of New York Metro Blind Hockey organized the event.
"Originally when I started this, I thought seeing the blind and visually impaired on the ice was going to be the big event. But I think the big event really is seeing the volunteers and parents with smiles on their faces. They just come off and they ask me when the next event is because they can't wait to do it again,” he says.
It was free for participants and volunteers who helped.
The next skating event is Sunday, Oct. 20.
