When you talk local sports legends in Fairfield County, the late Bob Baird comes to mind immediately. In a special ceremony Wednesday night, the town's two high school softball teams honored Baird's family prior to their rivalry game.
Baird was a softball coach at Stratford High School and served as the school's athletic director for 20 years. Some of his grandkids helped throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Frank Deluca field.
Baird passed away four months ago at the age of 75, but his son says Baird's memory lives on. "It's just great the whole community has come together with this and we're very happy to take part in it and everybody's just so appreciative of all the work our Dad did over those years," Rob Baird said.
The annual Bob Baird Memorial Scholarship will be given to seniors at Stratford high school starting soon.
