Students chant 'build the wall' at Wilton HS football game
School leaders in Wilton say a group of students began chanting "build the wall" at football game last week.
It happened last Friday night at the Wilton High School game against Danbury High School, a school with a large Hispanic population.
The principal at Wilton High says a number of students started the chant. He says the kids denied that the chant was directed at Danbury, but rather they were expressing their political opinion.
"Nobody wants to stifle anybody's free speech," says Wilton's Interfaith Action Committee's Steve Hudspeth. "That's not the objective here, but any statement has to be read in context. Schools have the right to avoid disruption on campuses."
Wilton's principal sent home a letter saying, "The students involved denied offensive intent, but we recognize that many will feel offended by this particular phrase."
In the end he said he hopes it's a teachable moment.
