Students: Safer school walking routes pass Bridgeport Planning and Zoning
Bridgeport’s Planning and Zoning Commission has approved adding a plan to make school walking routes safer.
Students say the vote passed Monday night to add language to the city's 10-year master plan that would prioritize sidewalk repairs and safer school walking routes.
Make The Road CT Parents and Students rallied before the Bridgeport Planning and Zoning Commission in support of their “Walking Towards a Brighter Future” campaign in support of safe walking routes to school.
Students held signs reading "Bridgeport Students Deserve Better" and "Our City, Our Voice, Our Input."
The students have been pushing the city for safer walking routes to school for more than a year.
Students say poor sidewalks and unsafe intersections not only make them late to class, but they are dangerous.
Students drafted language to be added to the master plan that prioritizes sidewalk repairs and allows them to have input during the process.
They say the Zoning and Planning Commission voted and approved the students’ language to be included in the master plan
Students who live up to two miles away from school say they must walk to class and are also pushing for city bus passes.
