Many people in southwestern Connecticut don't even use their land lines at home anymore, but a new study will make people think twice about chatting on a cell phone before bedtime.
The study, funded by the cell phone industry, found radiation from a cell phone can cause insomnia. During the study, researchers looked at brain activity before and during sleep. Volunteers exposed to radiation took longer to get into a deep sleep, and spent less time in the deepest stage of sleep.
The results of the study were not surprising to doctors at Norwalk Hospital's Sleep Disorders Center.
?When most people are trying to shut their brains down for sleep, it makes sense that when you have a very high frequency, which is what that is, it makes sense that it might push the brain in the wrong direction and wake the brain more up,? says Dr. Mary O'Malley.
Dr. O?Malley adds there is not enough data on the long-term effects of cell phone use yet. She says it is a good idea to put the phone aside before bedtime.
