Summit police have arrested a 46‑year‑old Pennsylvania man accused of breaking into a Springfield Avenue business and stealing a high‑end electric bicycle during an overnight burglary earlier this month.

Police say officers were dispatched to a business on the 300 block of Springfield Avenue at approximately 3:04 a.m. last Friday after a commercial burglar alarm was activated. When officers arrived, they found the front door ajar, with shattered glass on the ground and an audible alarm sounding. A search of the building and surrounding area did not immediately locate a suspect.

A representative from the business responded to the scene and provided access to surveillance footage, which played a key role in the investigation. According to police, video shows the suspect first arriving in the area around 2:32 a.m., looking inside the store from the exterior. He was later seen riding onto Glenwood Place on a 2026 black Trek FX+1S bicycle that had previously been reported stolen in Pennsylvania and was later recovered as part of the investigation.

Investigators say the suspect returned to the business on foot at approximately 2:57 a.m. He allegedly broke the glass of the front door with a sledgehammer and entered the store at 2:58 a.m. Surveillance footage shows the suspect taking a light blue Specialized Vado 5.0 electric bicycle valued at $4,999.99 and leaving the store less than a minute later, riding away toward Springfield Avenue.

Members of the Summit Police Department were contacted and responded to continue what officials described as a “multi‑layered” investigation. Over the next 27 hours, detectives worked across multiple jurisdictions, including Pennsylvania, reviewing camera footage, collecting evidence, conducting surveillance and following up on leads.

On Saturday, around 6:22 a.m., detectives and patrol officers arrested Joseph Holman, 46, of Philadelphia. Police say Holman resisted officers during the arrest.

Holman was charged with burglary, theft by unlawful taking, unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, hindering prosecution, possession of burglar tools, receiving stolen property, weapon possession for an unlawful purpose, possession of a weapon by a person prohibited under law, and criminal mischief. Police also said Holman had two active warrants at the time of his arrest, one of which was for escaping custody.

Following processing, Holman was transported to the Essex County Jail, where he is being held pending a detention hearing.
