In a landmark decision, the United States Supreme Court today upheld most of President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act.
The 5-4 ruling states that the mandate is constitutional as a tax.
As a result, most Americans will have to have health insurance by 2014 or face a penalty.
The Supreme Court found problems with the expansion of Medicaid, but said it could proceed under specific circumstances.
Obama praised the decision this afternoon, saying the law will protect Americans from facing financial hardships because of an illness.
