The owners of a long-vacant building in Stamford’s South End want the public's input about what should fill the property.
For the past five years, the 84,000-square-foot building at 699 Canal St. has sat empty—ever since Fairway Market closed after a decade there, leaving the area without a major grocery store.
“That's something I’ve noticed as somebody who lives by here. I would say if I want to go to a decent supermarket, I’ve got to drive a couple miles up north,” said Jake Mezzanotte. “I think a supermarket could definitely be optimal for this location.”
“It [Fairway Market] was beautiful. We all loved it. We miss Fairway terribly, and we'd like it to come back or something very similar,” Diana Hughes told News 12.
Darien’s V20 Group, which bought the property last year, is now actively working to lease the space and wants to hear the community’s vision.
It has teamed up with Stamford’s Office of Economic Development to explore how to bring more convenient shopping and services to the area. That includes putting together a quick survey to gather feedback and help target prospective tenants. It comes as Harbor Point's population continues to grow.
“One of the top requests we continue to hear from residents is the return of a grocery store near 699 Canal St., the former Fairway Market. We encourage residents to fill out the short survey to help show prospective grocers there is strong demand for a new store in the South End and Downtown,” said Lauren Meyer, special assistant to Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons.
Club Studio Fitness, a high-end boutique gym, is set to open in the building in late 2026, but it’s expected to take up less than half of the space, leaving plenty of room for the survey results.
