A New Haven man appeared before a judge Monday in the murder of a man outside a Stamford McDonald's.

The judge held the bond of James McLamb, 22, at $2 million. McLamb was arrested for the murder of 52-year-old Antonio Muralles, a Stamford resident and Guatemalan native. Authorities say the killing was over spilled coffee.

Police say as Muralles stepped outside of the McDonald's on Bedford Street last Wednesday, he bumped into the suspect, spilling coffee on McLamb. Police say words were exchanged and that Muralles was viciously attacked and stabbed through the heart.

Muralles tried to apologize, according to police, but he was still attacked. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

"Apparently, there was a stick also involved in this attack," said Stamford Police Lt. Diedrich Hohn. "He was being poked with a stick by a juvenile."

Another suspect, who is a 15-year-old boy, will appear in juvenile court Tuesday. Police say the teen was the instigator and that he stabbed Muralles. McLamb is due back in court in April.

Muralles' niece says that her uncle had lived in Connecticut for more than two decades and was a hardworking family man. Muralles wasn't married and didn't have any children. There is no official word on when his funeral will be held.

The crime is the city's first murder of the year.
