Darien police and the Stamford bomb squad responded to what they thought was a bomb scare Saturday after a suspicious package was left behind at the Noroton Heights Post Office.
Authorities said they were contacted around 11 a.m. by a customer who found the package sitting on a counter.
Police evacuated everyone from the post office as well as from surrounding businesses. They blocked traffic as bomb squad investigators tried to determine what was inside the package.
"There were two items [inside the package]; one was a nondescript plastic bag. The item inside the plastic bag is an item that's not readily available in this area,? Darien Sgt. Bob Shredders said. Police offered no other details.
Shredders says it took the bomb squad about a half hour to determine the package was safe.
