Love for Puerto Rico is going to take over the city on Sunday at the 67th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. And with over 1 million Puerto Rican people in New York City, parade organizer Lillian Rodriguez Lopez says it’s their time to shine.
“This parade is about the power of community, and Puerto Ricans were arriving in the city, and like I said, had done so much in so many sectors of life...we wanted our presence to be felt. We didn’t want to feel invisible in a city and in a country in which we provided so much to,” she said.
There are several honorees on Sunday, but some of the notables are Lisa Velez, of Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam and Wanda Díaz-Merced – a visually impaired astronomer. Even though Fifth Avenue runs downtown, Rodriguez Lopez says the parade will start on 44th Street and will go up Fifth Avenue to 79th Street.
“There is no bad location on Fifth Avenue to see this parade. We expect to see the streets lined with hundreds of thousands of people, if not a million people,” she said.
Rodriguez Lopez says if you want to get a top viewing spot you should arrive an hour early at 10 a.m. The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m.
