The Town of Orange is offering tax rebates to residents who opt to drive environmentally friendly cars.
Orange will forgive taxes on cars that have a federal rating of at least 40 mpg. It is the first municipality in the state to offer such a rebate.
The legislation is thanks in part to Orange resident Alan Kotz, a retired health physicist and car enthusiast. Kotz pushed the town to encourage the use of fuel-efficient vehicles.
?The purpose of the legislation ? is something that will last for years and years, every year increasing the benefit to the people in our town,? he says.
Kotz?s motivation for the action was the desire to fight air pollution and improve health conditions. He says the town?s embrace of the legislation shows that it cares for its residents.
