The Town of Southbury is in a local state of emergency.

The Southbury Volunteer Fire Department says it was forced to call in help from neighboring agencies, including Middlebury, Waterbury, Cheshire and Woodbury due to the severe flooding on Sunday.

“They were able to ferry people from the campsite to the boat launch and bring them to the shelter here at the fire house.” said Southbury Volunteer Fire Department Capt. Jeff McKee about the nearly 50 campers who were rescued from Kettletown Park.

Several cars were left abandoned after being stuck in water and mud.

“Two in the morning , we had some sort of dam or logjam let loose, came through, flooded the center of town again, activated swift water team again, they mitigated the problem. Dealt with propane trucks leaking,” said Assistant Chief Robert Barnes.

Fire departments continue to respond to calls. The department wants people to make sure they are not using generators too close to their homes, as it puts them at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
