Dwellers of Stratford's Long Beach peninsula were finally forced to move off of the land after an 11-year court battle with the town.

Stratford owns the land and leased it out to people who subsequently built cottages and homes there. After a fire destroyed a bridge to the land in 1996, the town decided not to renew the leases because of safety concerns and costs.

Cottage dwellers fought the decision and lost every appeal.

Mayor Jim Miron said he is glad that the town is able to move on in this matter.

It is still to be determined what the land will be used for once all the occupants leave.
