City leaders announced Monday that Beardsley Park is set to receive safety upgrades thanks to a state grant.
The news comes after a mother and her three children died when their minivan rolled into the park's lake in July. The first part of the renovation includes the installation of a guard rail that will run the length of the sidewalk near the lake. A concession stand will be demolished and upgrades will be made to the parking area.
Mayor Bill Finch also said he wants to provide the fire department with scuba gear, which it did not have the day of the accident. Future plans also include installing a rock barrier along the lake.
