The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's U Drive. U Text. U Pay. campaign kicks off statewide Saturday.
State and local police will have extra eyes on the road to crack down on distracted driving thanks to a federal grant.
If you're caught texting and driving, it's $200 for a first offense, $375 for a second offense and $625 for third and subsequent offenses.
Using hand-held mobile electronic devices while driving is prohibited under Connecticut law. Drivers who are 16 or 17 years old are not allowed to use cellphones or mobile devices at any time, even with a hands-free accessory.
NHTSA says distracted driving claimed the lives of more than 3,000 people in 2020.
The U Drive. U Text. U Pay. campaign runs through April 30.
